Quality Score Explained

Everything you need to know about Quality Score
(in 2 minutes or less).

Quality Score (QS) was created by Google in 2005 as a way of protecting Google’s revenue stream.  It has been wildly successful!

Google generates revenue every time someone clicks on an ad.  What if there is an ad occupying prime space on a page but is not getting clicks?   That’s a loss to Google.

In Google, the QS is assigned to the keyword on a scale of 1 to 10.  If an advertiser has an ad with a low QS because appears in the wrong keywords, or is not closely matched or relevant to the keywords, then it’s not going to get many clicks.

Google is not the only search engine to use Quality Score, Bing and Facebook, for example, both use a similar version.

Quality Score is relatively unknown and severely under-utilized despite being the most important factor in search engine advertising success.

Quality Score Lowers the Cost Per Click

The cost per click increases as the Quality Score decreases.

Those at the low end of the scale can be paying 10X more per click than those at the high end of the scale.

Doubling your Quality Score has the same effect as doubling your budget.

Quality Score Enhances Bidding

Bidding determines the ad’s position in the search results. The actual cost per click is not the same as the bid. The actual cost is usually much lower than the bid.

The bid amount will be enhanced by the Quality Score by multiplying it by the Quality Score.

Bids for those at the high end of the scale will be 10X as high as those at the low end of the scale.

Maximum Budget Effectiveness – No Guesswork

When your entire campaign is 10/10, then your ads are getting the most possible out of your budget.

Any increase in conversions would have to be through keyword management, or adjustments and constant improvements to the sales process after the ad is clicked.
